A view from la playa
By Gil Beyer
This is my fifth visit to the Yucatan over the past seven years. I've only been here a few weeks so far but I've noted some anomalies that give me pause. I'm starting to think that there may be something to the Mayan tradition that says that December 2012 will change the world as we know it.
In the silent city
By Anna Sunderland Kudsk
Today is viernes de Luto. Friday of mourning. In English we call it "Good Friday" and it seems strange to me that these two names have such different meanings in my two languages, in my two worlds.
Dental Care in Merida
By John McCue
My wife, Bonnie, has needed a great deal of dental work, and this winter had been in a great deal of pain with a bad front tooth, limited to soft foods, etc. The local dental surgeon estimated $10,000 plus to extract 4 teeth & deep clean all quadrants. She would still need to see several other specialists, and this work would be spread over at least five months of further pain. This was looking like $15 - 20K in expense in our home of Tampa, Florida.

One of the Unexpected
Consequences of NAFTA
By Gil Beyer
NAFTA was touted as being the best means to bring a higher standard of living to the peoples of Mexico and the rest of Mesoamerica. If this was indeed the goal NAFTA has failed in numerous ways. Senior citizen discount cards
By Jim Duignan
Did you know that... foreigners 62 years of age with an FM2 are
eligible for a senior citizen card called INSEN (Instituto Nacional
de la Senectud). You need to take two passport size photos, a copy
of your FM2, a copy of a recent utility bill and a copy of your
passport.
Bicycling the Yucatan
By John M. Grimsrud
From the Puuc hills to the extensive coast of Yucatan there are thousands of kilometers of paved quiet outback roads through countless Mayan villages interspersed with colonial haciendas and ancient Mayan ruins all there just waiting for your visit.
By way of the sea
By Charlie Mayers S/V Gypsy Star
There are times life doesn't happen the way you planned it to happen and that isn't always a bad thing. So it was with us this year when we discovered Progreso and the astonishing Yucatan.
