ICY Cultural Events
February - March, 2007
The Cultural Institute of Yucatan (ICY) has prepared an extraordinary variety of events for the months of February and March that range from the most sublime of universal music to cinema that has overcome all barriers, offering a list of options for all who live in or visit our state and wish to fill their spirits through these artistic productions.
This special month will kick-off with the Grand Anniversary Gala offered by the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra on February 23rd at 9PM and 25th at 12 noon at the Peon Contreras Theater. Celebrating three years of the formation of this excellent group of musicians, the guest violinist Aaron Bitran from the renowned Latinoamerican Quartet, the program will include pieces from Chavez, Mozart, Adams and Stravinsky. Tickets at the box office.

On Saturday February 24th, the Percussion Ensemble Sensemaya will perform at the Peon Contreras Theater with works by Spears, Volz, Heim, Rold‡n, Faini, Levitan and their own director, David Mart’nez, a member of the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra. Entrance is free.

In March the Yucatan Youth Symphonic will present a grand concert celebrating their second anniversary. Check the listing. The Cinema Cycle of Intimate Maps Under the Look of Fassbinder will continue through to the beginning of March. Popular during the 70's this grand work by this German director, he was one of the three representatives of the so-called New German Cinema.

Also in March, you will be able to see the XLVIII (48th) International Cinema Showing with productions from France, the USA, Argentina, Canada, Austria, Bosnia, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Denmark, Sweden, Russia and Portugal, made between 2004 and 2006.
At the Peon Contreras Theater Gallery the works of contemporary artist Monica Castillo will be shown. Exhibiting pieces of installation and photography on one hand, on the other she will present a post-humus homage in memory of the master Rafael Berzunza with graphic works.
In the Visual Arts Center, located in the Santa Ana neighborhood, you will have the opportunity to see 120 pieces that are part of the III National Biennale of Visual Arts in Yucatan.
Trova, the romantic music that has made Yucatan famous, and its musicians, the trovadores, will be celebrated the entire month of March.

For the second time the National Ballet of Cuba together with the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra, will present the complete staging of Coppelia.
And last but not least, applications are still open those who want to compete in the 2007 edition of the National Biennale of Literature, a space created to promoting Mexico's literature.
