ICY Cultural Events

May - June, 2007

The Yucatan Cultural Institute invites all to enjoy the return of opera to Merida with the presentation of Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly - a sad love story that has crossed cultural frontiers and time. The grand production will be presented in our city with the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra and the soloists soprano Virginia Wagner, the tenor Arturo Martin, the bajo Luis Rodarte, the baritones Oscar de la Torre and Martin Luna, the mezzo-soprano Maria Eugenia Guerrero, all accompanied by the Polyphonic Chorus and the Opera Workshop Chorus. The functions will be on Tuesday, May 15th and Thursday, May 17th at 9 PM at the city theater the Peon Contreras Theater on Calle 60 by 57.

The Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra will continue with its activities which include the presentation of the recital Poema Frances (French Poem.) It is promised that the audience will be left sighing by the feelings emitted in this concert. Friday May 25th at 9 PM and Sunday May 27th at noon at the Peon Contreras Theater.

The quartet Cuarteo Genesis is the group that is in charge of continuing with the Chamber Music Cycle on Tuesday, May 22

Then continuing with another program, that are specifically preparing the metal instruments for the Cuarteto Puro Corno that will give their presentation on Friday June 22. Both concerts will be at 9 PM at the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Theater on Calle 60 across the street from the Peon Contreras Theater.

Jazz lovers will be able to enjoy a space programmed specifically for this legendary genre of music during the III Jazz Cycle that will begin on Saturday, May 26th with the group Jatin Lazz, under the direction of Mauricio Configlio. On Saturday June 9th, it will be Jazz Tunkul's turn to perform under the direction of Alberto Palomo. During this concert, the group will present the works from their most recent musical production taped in Mexico and France in which musical instruments and pre-Hispanic Maya ambientation is used. The date is in the Cineteca Nacional at the Teatro Merida on Calle 62 between 59 and 61 at 9 PM.

Wednesday's at the Peon Contreras will present Yucatan from Party to Party under the direction of the Lol-ixi'im Folkloric Ballet (Corn Flower) on Wednesday, May 23rd. Liberdanza will present their show, Tango Passion, on Wednesday, May 30th. Both functions will be at 9 PM at the Peon Contreras Theater on Calle 60 by 57.

The presentation of El Patio de Monipodio (Monopodium's Backyard), under the direction of Francisco Marin is an adaptation by Jose Ramon Enriquez of the exemplary novel by Miguel de Cervantes "Rinonete y Cortadillo." The work tells the story of two ruffian thieves, Rinconete and Cortadillo, the first a card shark and the other an agile and quick person with a pair of scissors. The presentation will be in the central courtyard of the Mayab Casa de la Cultura on Calle 63 between 64 and 66 on Sundays May 20th, May 27th and then June 3rd and 10th

El patio de Monipodio

Cuarteto Genesis will be playing at UADY's Teatro Felipe Carillo on May 22nd at 8.30 pm. They will be playing Haydn, Schubert, Revueltas y Piazzola.
