MACAY new exhibit
Sculpture Sisterhoods Germany–Mexico 2008
The Cultural Foundation MACAY, A.C., together with their program Merida of Yucatan, City of Sculpture (MYCE) and the support of the local Municipal Government, organizes yearly Sisterhood in Sculpture exhibitions. This yearly showing of sculpture has been going on for more than five years and has brought together sculptors from the United States, Spain, Japan, Mexico and now in 2008, Germany.

ADVENTURE: ART AND ECOLOGY
• Sculpture Sisterhoods Germany–Mexico 2008 addresses a necessary reflection on the problems of ecology.
• The presentation, made up of 40 pieces, makes Merida a promoter of the conformation of exhibitions, in which there is not only dialog with space but also with the environment and the inhabitants of the city.

The dialog between the sculptures presented by Mexican artists and the guest country has been the principal mission of the shows. They are now adding the aspect of daily life: uses and customs, liveable spaces, work or dispersion, and public and private environments.
In the context of the world wide concern about the over exploitation of the environment, the indiscriminate use of the world resources, the consequences and the different proposals to denounce and stop this process, when added to man’s capacity to structurally alter the environment, the importance of the themes of health, climate, water, the ground, mega-cities, risks, resources and life that are the center of political, economic, social and cultural speeches, this is when it is relevant to show the important role that art has in the concentization of such problems.

Sculpture Sisterhood Mexico-Germany 2008 was presented to show the evident necessity to address these problems. From the beginning when the research began it was discovered to be a complex process, full of questions and interdisciplinary discussions. The participation format and the presentation of the project shows challenges to the traditional sculpture, not only to the show but also to the artistic discussions in Mexico’s present artistic world.

The exhibition, made up of 40 pieces, presents Merida as a promoter in the conformation of exhibitions, in which there is dialog not only with space but also with the environment and the inhabitants of the city. It should be noted that the great majority of the pieces were conceived ex profeso for the show and nearly 90% of the pieces were created in situ, taking into consideration the conditions and challenges to preserve them during a period of 10 months.
