Thai Mid

Thai cuisine is an exotic cuisine known for being fresh, light and made up of an unusual combination of flavors that include coconut, fruit sauces, lemon leaves and cilantro, to name just a few. Thailand, located in the Southeast Asia, is a country where, like the majority of the countries in this area, rice is the base to the cuisine. It is said that when a Thai person extends an invitation to eat rice, it is a promise that the host will be serving the best he/she has to offer.

However, you will find they also use pasta, either fresh or dried (Pat Thai) and a variety of chilies, lemon grass and peppers, ingredients that afford a wonderful zing to the dishes. This cuisine is a mixture of diverse Asian influences that include Japan, India, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Traditional Thai cuisine is generally served in three to five dishes that are placed in the middle of the table so that each diner can serve him or herself. Thai people eat at low tables using pillows for seats. They only use spoons and forks for dishes that have pasta. Otherwise chop sticks are used.
The first course, that IS served individually, is usually a spicy cabbage soup, served with chunks of fish and sauce and tamarind. The salad dish can be a prepared with green mango with shrimp, chilies and coconut. Main course dishes can include such delicacies as red curry chicken with coconut milk, chili paste, lemon and bay leaves accompanied by a wonderful steamed rice.

To finish the daily meal, fruits such as banana, papaya or mango are the usual. Only on special occasions are special desserts prepared.

The gastronomic harmony of Thai food is inspired by Chinese, Hindu, Laotian, Viet Nam, Portuguese and French cuisine. It appears to be quite simple but the elaboration of each dish is an art form. This delicious cuisine can now be savored in Merida at ThaiMid Restaurant located in the north part of town on Calle 31 No. 101 on the corner of Calle 20. Reservations can be made at 927-2551.

EDITORS NOTE: Unfortunately, as of May 2005, Thai Mid has closed its doors in Merida.
