Open Air Museum

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Yucatan (MACAY) is the obligatory window in the southeast of Mexico for those who want to see contemporary art. This museum has specialized in presenting this style of art for more than a decade.

Some 80,000 people visit the museum annually and during the past 10 years there have been more than 500 exhibitions by local, national and international artist showing more than 20,000 works of art.

A sculpture by Betty Gold on the Paseo de Montejo.

Four years ago MACAY launched their educational program by taking their art to the people. How did they do this? By taking the art to the streets (literally) and placing enormous sculptures in two strategic parts of the city - the Paseo Montejo and the Pasaje de la Revolucion right beside the Cathedral on the Main Plaza. This way everyone sees the art as they go about their daily lives.

It was in 2001 that the The Merida de Yucatan, City of Sculpture program was formally instituted in 2001. Since then 250 pieces have been shown by national and international artists that include Pedro Cervantes, Sebastian, Leonora Carrington, Juan Soriano, Vicente Rojo, Gunther Gerzo, Jose Luis Cuevas and Roger Von Gunten, just to name of few.

A sculpture by Frederico Silva stands guard on the Pasaje de la Revolución.

Materials that are being used in sculptures in Merida include marble, metal, resins, wood, onyx and fiberglass using cement and bronze molds. Other pieces are sculpted freehand without molds.

For those that have the opportunity to visit the Paseo Montejo and the Pasaje de la Revolucion, you will have an enriching experience because the city of Merida is presently the site where Mexican and North American artists are being featured. In 2006 the Spanish will be special guests and in 2007, Japanese artists will delight us with their works.

The MACAY dream started out as an Open Air Museum. Today they are aiming for more. They want everyone who visits Merida to see what the worldwide artist community is offering and therefore have a complete idea of what is happening in the international art world.
