Hacienda Petac
Haciendas are large estates
similiar to America's southern plantations. They
played an important role in Mexico's great wealth and economic growth
for more than 300 years. The type of hacienda in Mexico depended
on its location. There were cattle, sugar, mining, tequila, cotton,
tobacco, coffee, lumber and grain haciendas.
In Yucatan the haciendas were dedicated to cattle and corn production
until about 1830 when they started the production of henequen or
sisal fiber. The sisal fiber industry fell apart with the invention
of synthethic rope. As a consequence, most haciendas were abandoned
in the 1940's and fell into ruin.

Within the past seven years, the eyes of many investors have turned
towards these
haciendas. The buildings and land have been restored - no simple
task - and are now used in various ways. Some are private second
homes, others are luxury hotels and still others are upscale restaurants.
Hacienda Petac is one of these haciendas. Built upon the remains
of a Mayan site, the rich history of Hacienda Petac mirrors the
evolution of this fascinating region. Now privately owned, this
18th century
hacienda is located approximately 30 minutes south of the Merida
airport in the small village of Petac. Hacienda Petac has 5 bedrooms,
7 baths, sleeps up to 10 and is offered for rent as a home, not
a hotel. Rooms on the property include a library, games room, bar,
main salon, and chapel along with the kitchen, dining room and bedrooms.
In its current transformation, Hacienda Petac offers a tranquil
environment and luxury accommodations to select guests looking for
the road less traveled.
