Hotel MedioMundo Gift Shop

Hotel MedioMundo is a peaceful oasis in the historical center of Mérida, with soothing comforts for leisure travelers. The 12 spacious, pretty rooms are simply but colorfully decorated, and the onsite owners interact with hotel guests, ensuring their comfort and offering warm Yucatecan-style hospitality.

Owners Nicole and Nelson decided to start their hotel gift shop after guests kept asking where to buy bedspreads and pillow covers like the ones which are used in their guestrooms.  “I love to travel and I like artisan crafts, so what better way to combine both passions,” explains Nicole.  “I travel throughout Mexico and sift through hundreds of crafts to find choice pieces for the shop.  With all the mass-production of practically everything we use on a daily basis, we are losing two of our noble abilities as human beings: to create and appreciate art. Artisan crafts are a financially accessible way to have art in our homes made with someone's hands and imagination.”

Some of the treasures to be found at the shop at Hotel MedioMundo:

Authentic Talavera from Puebla: Only nine certified manufacturers still exist of authentic Talavera ceramic earthenware from the state of Puebla, Mexico. The production has remained the same since its creation in the 16th century. Every piece of Talavera is hand-made and carefully hand-painted with vibrant colors of natural mineral pigments and intricate designs. “We visited five of the certified manufacturers on our trip to Puebla in November and brought back choice pieces for the shop,” says Nicole.

Original jewelry: MedioMundo’s exclusive line of jewelry started as an artistic project with their children when they couldn't find a suitable summer program to keep them off the computer and Xbox for a couple of hours a day. “We collect our beads from our travels from all over Mexico and beyond,” explains Nicole. “We use sterling silver findings for our top-of-the-line jewelry and stainless steel for our affordable selection.”

Textiles from Chiapas and Guatemala: Pillow covers, bedspreads, and table runners are an easy and inexpensive way to give a home decor a new look.  Textile arts are a great gift idea, easy to pack, don't break, and sizes are usually standard.

Pottery: A main attraction this year is their selection of clay jaguars from Chiapas. Each jaguar is hand-molded, hand-painted, and with its own distinct character. The shop also carries black clay pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec in Oaxaca, as well as pre-Hispanic designed pottery from Michoacán and functional lead-free ceramics by master craftsman Javier Servin.
