Hear the Leones Roar
By Greg Frier
It's that time of year again. Baseball is back in Merida as the Yucatan Leones battle for the Mexican League crown. The season opens March 22 against the Piratas of Campeche at Parque Kukulkan, which is located in the south east section of the Circuito Colonias. Ticket prices are varied depending on who the Leones are playing and the section chosen. We like the Butaca Alta tier because of the cooling evening breeze. Prices for that section range from $18 pesos to $35 pesos depending on who's in town.
Season tickets are also available. Game day tickets can be bought at the stadium. Opening day is usually sold out but tickets are readily available for the rest of the season which runs through July.
Last year the Leones finished in third place in their division and reached the semi-finals against Tabasco. The play-offs also featured an historic moment as a Leones' pitcher, Oscar Rivera, pitched a perfect game. This is a rare event even in the Major League. The team is made up of players from the Yucatan as well as players from other Mexican states. There are even a few Americans. Returning player Scott Bullet, one of the fan favorites from last year, played for the Chicago Cubs.

Eat some kibis, papas a la francesa or some of the other food bought directly to your seat. Beer and refrescos are also available. Come join a small group of ex-pats in the Butaca Alta section, first base side, or find your own place amongst the Yucatecos and enjoy a truly pleasurable evening.
Take a cab to the game for about $50 pesos. There is also transportation after the game back to Centro. Weekday games start at 8 p.m. and weekend games at 6 p.m.
