Cultural Fall 2006

Now that summer is over with all the frenzy that that involves, the moment that traditionally offers beautiful afternoons in Merida arrives – the fall season. Fall is a special time in the Yucatan as it is a time of important and diverse cultural activities. For 23 years the Yucatecan population offers and enjoys one of the most important cultural seasons on the calendar – the festival of Otoño Cultural – Culture in October.

The 2006 edition of this festival comes with a fresh, new, and contemporary outlook.

Yucatecan Armando Manzanero and Susan Zabaleta with From A to Z, along with the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra and a choir will open this year’s edition of the fall festival with the Hymn of Happiness on October 11th.

The trova of Yucatan reinvents itself every day, romantic but with a particular way of expressing feelings. This fall, these artists are representing trova for the Festival of Autumn: Jesus Armando one of the best ever trova singers, Felipe Cruz, also a great songwriter, and Adalberto, one of the immortals of this type of music. In addition, there will be a presentation of female trova singers.

Theater and dance will be the icing on the cake at this year’s festival with the romantic presentation of Romeo and Juliet that will be presented by the Siberian Ballet. In contrast, The Flowers and Roles of War that the Al Sur Dance will present on October 22nd. The Nieces of Uncle Bigornia will take over the stage on October 18th.

Reaching out to youth is one of the goals of this year’s edition of Cultural Fall. For this generation of young people that many feel are not in touch with cultural activities, there will be a night of Life Like, electronic sounds and contemporary visions that will invade Merida on October 21; while on October 22 Julieta Venegar will add spice to the Fall Days Festival.

This festival will pay homage to Federico Garcia Lorca as literature comes alive in a literary cycle dedicated to the writer from October 23 to 27th. In addition,

there will be an important space for visual and contemporary artists to present a series of interesting exhibitions in the Centro de Artes Visuales.

And for the last events of the festival, on October 25th the Orchestra Típico of the Yucatan will present Mexican songs, just days after both kids and adults enjoy the La Trouppe with Truppi Truppi en concert on October 22nd. Cultural Fall will end on the evening of October 27th with a double gala function celebrating the arts: the Yucatan Symphonic Orchestra will mesmerize the audience with romantic pieces from Mexico and Colombia; at the same time, on the Main Plaza of Merida, the duet Ha-ash will present the best of their repertory.

From Yucatan and all over the world, the singers, artists and musicians in these events will present a grand festival of arts in the season of art – Otoño Cultural 2006 – Cultural Fall 2006.
